A proper method for connecting a bar code scanner to an Android / iOS device, is using the Bluetooth HID profile. All the details for pairing the scanner using the HID profile are outlined in the User's Guide, available from the Honeywell Website, under 'Cordless System Operation \ Using the Scanner with Bluetooth devices \ Bluetooth HID Keyboard Connect' (Rev. E and higher).

The following steps are required:

  1. Scan the configuration bar code DEFALT. in order to set the scanner to its default settings.
  2. Scan the Plug-and-Play bar code PAPBTH (Bluetooth HID Keyboard Connect) from the User's Guide to configure the scanner for the correct interface.
  3. Ensure the Bluetooth radio is switched on the host (smartphone, tablet, PC) device.
  4. Discover the scanner with the 'scan devices' option on the Android and select pair with this device (the scanner will be displayed as a keyboard).
  5. On the Android device a pop-up appears with a random 6 digit PIN (the message will be similar to: Type PIN to pair with Xenon_1902_SN_11341b0984 to pair with 36428').
  6. Now scan the 6 digit PIN within 60 seconds by scanning.
    1. The BT_PIN bar code from the User's Guide.
    2. Followed by scanning the PIN code, using the 10 numeric bar codes (K0K to K9K) from the User's Guide in the 'BT HID Keyboard Connect' section.
    3. Scan Save (MNUSAV.) Command.
  7. While entering the PIN code on the scanner and
    1. The wrong PIN is being used, failed to pair with Xenon_1902_SN_11341b0984, Incorrect PIN or Passkey is displayed on the Android device.
    2. It takes too long, (>60 secs) the Android times out. It messages it fails and generates a new PIN.
    3. The proper PIN is scanned, it accepts the PIN and changes the status to 'Paired and connected'.

For connecting to an iOS device, the following steps need to be followed.

  1. Scan the 'PAPBTH' bar code.
  2. Look up in the 'Settings' menu of the Apple device the option for Bluetooth.
  3. Once activated, a list of Bluetooth devices that are nearby should appear, from this list, select the device that has the name 'model_name>_<model_no>_SN_<serial_number>'.
  4. The device should be connected to the iOS device. In order to test, open Notes and scan a bar-code. The bar-code should appear on the device.

NOTE:

  • The PAPBTH command was initially not supported and is available on FW revision BJ000089EAA (early 2012), and onwards. Firmware is available per request from Technical Support.
As apparently the evolving tablet and smart phone business has some known issues, Honeywell is asking to provide feedback on both working combinations as well as none working combinations, to serve other potential users.
  • Honeywell found that stock Android versions 2.x.x in general end up in status 'paired but not connected', this with any third party keyboard device, included an official 'Microsoft Bluetooth keyboard'. It appears that the stock Android versions do not fully support the HID protocol, and 3rd party custom kernels or add-on drivers could be a solution (L2CAP server sockets seem unsupported).
  • About Android 3.x.x. versions, there are contradicting statements (both for failing and working devices).
  • With Android version 4.0.4 there were several customers providing feedback that the scanner connect successfully with stock kernels, and until now no failing devices.
Note: For devices with an older Android OS, the scanner can be connected using the standard SPP BT protocol. Most of the hardware manufactures using Android provide an Wedge-Application. For the Granit 1981i, Voyager 1602g and Voyager 1452g it is not necessary to enter a PIN / secure code as these devices do support the SSP (Secure Simple Pair) BT HID Protocol which does not require a PIN if the scanner and the Host BT Stack do support this protocol!
